Eyelid surgery is surgery where we treat bags or wrinkles of the upper and/or lower eyelids. Related to when eyelid surgery is needed, upper eyelids sometimes hanging down and can even block your vision and certainly, you'd want to get them treated then. Sometimes upper eyelids in women, especially, just obscure the makeup when they put it on their upper eyelids. So they might want a fold removed. Additionally, if eyelids are asymmetric, people might want them corrected. Lower lids, usually, people want them done when they get the big puffy bags under the eyes or if they get excessive wrinkles.
As far as eyelids go, with the upper lids, sometimes people just get laxity related to aging. Sometimes their brow actually will come down and they think they need their upper lids done. But they really need a little lifting of their brow so that they may come in thinking they need upper lid surgery. But really need an endoscopic brow lift or minimally invasive brow lift.
With lower lids, usually, people will notice puffiness or little fat bags that bother them the most. And they can be really not related to age. Some people can be somewhat younger, 20s, 30s and have some puffiness down there that can be treated. Other patients come in probably more typically in the 40s or 50s.
As far as how long it takes, upper eyelids surgery typically takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Lower lids surgery, more complex, probably more like an hour to an hour and a half. Really depends on the case and how much we have to do. Related to results, really it depends on bruising. If you don't bruise a lot, eyelid surgery typically looks good within a week. If you bruise, you might have to hide it with makeup for another week or so depending on how easy a bruiser you are.
Most patients present with eyelid surgery because they say their colleagues tell them they look tired and they don't feel tired. When they come back after they're healed, they neither look nor feel tired. So it's really more smaller procedure but still surgery. But really results in a nice improvement just in your overall appearance of wellbeing and healthiness.
