Brow Lift or Blepharoplasty: Which Option Is Right for Me?

If you have wrinkles on the upper third area of the face, you may be wondering if a brow lift (forehead lift) or blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is the best option for you. At The Clinic of Facial Plastic Surgery in BuffaloNY, Dr. David A. Sherris offers both procedures. In this blog post, he discusses brow lift vs. eye lift, offering a clear comparison of the two procedures.

Candidates

One of the major factors that we will look at during your consultation at our office is the area of the face that you wish to improve. We will discuss your concerns and cosmetic goals and examine the face and facial skin.

Good candidates for a brow lift often have horizontal lines running across the forehead, a crease or two between the eyebrows, and drooping brows. If these are your primary concerns, a brow lift is probably the ideal procedure for you.

Dr. Sherris also offers upper and lower eyelid surgery. Good candidates for lower eyelid surgery typically have puffy skin under the eyes, deep under-eye circles, and wrinkles under the eyes. Patients who undergo upper eyelid surgery have drooping skin and tissue on the upper eyelids, which can sometimes obscure vision.

The Incisions

The incisions used in each of these procedures will be in a different location based on your needs. During your consultation at our Buffalo practice, Dr. Sherris will show you exactly where your incisions will be located.

For a brow lift, Dr. Sherris will typically make several short endoscopic incisions or one long incisions where your forehead meets your brow-line. In lower eyelid surgery, the incision is typically along the lower lash-line or inside the lash line; while in upper eyelid surgery, the incision is made along the upper lash-line. Because of their discreet locations, all of these incisions fade and become barely visible, with proper care, within months of surgery.

The Surgical Procedure

Once the incisions are made for a brow lift, Dr. Sherris will lift the skin and underlying tissues to smooth out the skin, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and lightly pull the eyebrows into a more youthful location.

During lower eyelid surgery, fat underneath the eyes may be redistributed to reduce any puffiness. In addition, Dr. Sherris will tighten the skin and tissues to reduce wrinkles and under-eye circles.

In the upper eyelid surgery procedure, the skin and tissues are tightened, and excess skin is removed to clear vision and bring a more youthful appearance to the upper eyelids.

Recovery

While the brow lift and eyelid surgery procedures differ in many ways, your post-surgical instructions will be similar. You will be asked to rest and take it easy for a week or two after surgery. Patients will need to keep their head elevated during this time. It is also important to avoid any strenuous activity or sun exposure for at least six weeks after surgery. When you are out in the sun after you have healed, wear sunscreen to maintain your results.
