Is There an Ideal Age for Facial Plastic Surgery?
Facial cosmetic and facial plastic surgery can rejuvenate and improve the overall aesthetics of the face.
Dr. David A. Sherris is often asked “is there an ideal age for facial plastic surgery” during consultations at the Clinic of Facial Plastic Surgery in Buffalo, NY. Each type of facial plastic surgery has age ranges that are ideal. Today we’ll discuss the ideal ages for some of the most popular facial plastic surgery procedures.
Ideal Ages for Facelift
A facelift reverses the signs of aging, making it ideal for men and women who are middle-aged or older. When it comes to undergoing facelift surgery, it’s best for patients to be on the younger side, either late 40s or early 50s. This is because the skin is generally more elastic at this time and usually only requires minor revision.
Of course, patients over 50 can benefit from a facelift but the skin is less pliable and issues, like sagging skin, are more extensive. As a result, facelifts sometimes become more invasive with age.
Ideal Ages for Brow Lift
A brow lift addresses sagging forehead skin and lifts the eyebrows to rejuvenate one’s appearance. The ideal age for undergoing brow lift surgery is between the ages of 40 and 50. Buffalo patients over 50 may benefit from brow lift surgery and can experience good outcomes but the skin responds better to brow lift surgery when performed at a younger age.
Sometimes a brow lift is appropriate for younger adult patients if there is sagging in this area of the face because of an injury or genetics.
Ideal Ages for Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty can improve the aesthetics of the nose as well as address structural problems that affect breathing.
There isn’t a single ideal age for rhinoplasty, however, it’s typically recommended that patients wait until they are at least 18 years old before undergoing rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons.
Ideal Ages for Blepharoplasty
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, lifts sagging eyelids and can help make people look more rested and youthful.
In some cases, drooping upper eyelids interfere with vision. For some, this happens with age while others may have drooping eyelids as a result of genetics. As a result, eyelid surgery may be performed at a young age.
Although eyelid surgery may be performed during young adulthood when medically needed, it’s more common for people to wait until they are 35 or older to undergo blepharoplasty.
Other Considerations
Age is not the only determining factor in determining whether someone is an ideal candidate for facial plastic surgery.
Patients considering facial plastic surgery procedures must be in good general health and without certain medical conditions, like uncontrolled diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Candidates should also be prepared to give up smoking prior to surgery and throughout their recovery.
Patients who are in good health but over the ideal age for a particular facial plastic surgery procedure may still be a good candidate for surgery.
