Eliminate Imperfections with Bridge Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty surgery is one of the most frequently performed procedures at Dr. David A. Sherris’ facial plastic surgery center. Because minor nasal imperfections can have a significant impact on a person’s overall appearance, many patients choose to undergo this procedure. A well-shaped, proportionately sized nose brings balance to the facial features. When imperfections cause patients to feel self-conscious about their appearance, rhinoplasty can help.
Rhinoplasty can alter the size or shape of the nose, straighten a crooked nose, and improve breathing problems. Dr. Sherris customizes each rhinoplasty procedure so patients receive the specific alterations that will provide them with the aesthetic results they desire. One popular form of rhinoplasty is bridge rhinoplasty. Bridge rhinoplasty allows our Buffalo, NY patients to create a strong, straight, even bridge that will complement the nose and other facial features.
Bridge Rhinoplasty Candidates
Potential candidates for a bridge rhinoplasty are those who are dissatisfied with the appearance of the nose due to imperfections along the bridge. Some of the most common complaints of patients include the following:
- A flat or sunken in bridge
- A nose that appears too wide due to the lack of bridge definition
- Humps or bump along the bridge
All of these issues can be addressed through bridge rhinoplasty, but it is important that patients be good candidates for this surgical procedure. Patients must have realistic expectations for the results of surgery and be in good overall health. While age alone does not determine rhinoplasty candidacy, patients should keep in mind that the nose typically continues to grow until the age of 16. In order fto under any rhinoplasty procedure the nose must be done growing.
The Procedure
Every bridge rhinoplasty procedure addresses the unique needs of each of our patients, so no two procedures will be exactly the same. In most cases, bridge rhinoplasty will be performed using general anesthesia. This ensures patient comfort throughout surgery and also protects the patient’s airways during the procedure. The incisions used for a bridge rhinoplasty procedure may be placed inside the nose (known as a closed rhinoplasty), or across the skin that separates the nostrils (known as an open rhinoplasty). In either case, once the incisions are created, the skin will be lifted and the necessary alterations will be made.
The two most common alterations made during a bridge rhinoplasty include minimizing the bone to remove bumps along the bridge, or building up the bridge to add definition. When the bridge requires augmentation, Dr. Sherris will use a synthetic implant or the patient’s own tissue to strengthen and define the nasal bridge. Once the necessary adjustments have been made, the incisions will be closed and a soft cast will be placed over the nose. This cast supports the nose during the initial stage of rhinoplasty recovery.
